GEX Options Trading: Reading Dealer Gamma Without Guesswork

A practical guide to gamma exposure, zero-gamma transitions, and options walls for index and futures traders.

Gamma exposure, commonly shortened to GEX, estimates how options positioning may change dealer hedging as the underlying price moves. It is a map of potential hedging pressure, not a forecast and not a buy or sell signal.

What gamma exposure measures

An option's gamma describes how quickly its delta changes when the underlying price changes. Dealers who hedge option inventory may need to buy or sell the underlying as delta changes. Aggregating that sensitivity across strikes produces a gamma-exposure profile.

The estimate depends on open interest or current-day volume, contract gamma, contract multiplier, spot price, and an assumption about who holds each side of the trade. Because position ownership is not fully public, every GEX model is an informed approximation.

Positive gamma, negative gamma, and zero gamma

In a positive-gamma regime, hedging flows are often modeled as buying weakness and selling strength. That can dampen realized movement and encourage rotation around heavily positioned strikes. In a negative-gamma regime, the modeled hedge direction can reinforce price movement, increasing the chance of wider intraday ranges.

Zero gamma, sometimes called the gamma flip, is the estimated price where aggregate exposure changes sign. Traders use it as a regime boundary, then ask whether price is accepting above or below it rather than treating the level as exact to the tick.

How to read gamma walls

A positive gamma wall is a strike with concentrated positive exposure; a negative gamma wall is a strike with concentrated negative exposure. Large call or put concentrations can behave like magnets, barriers, or acceleration points depending on the surrounding regime and time to expiration.

  • Compare 0DTE flow with total open-interest GEX instead of mixing their time horizons.
  • Map SPY strikes to ES and QQQ strikes to NQ using the current price ratio, then round futures levels to the valid tick size.
  • Watch whether price rejects, rotates around, or accepts beyond a wall before assigning significance.

A disciplined intraday workflow

Start with the gamma regime, mark zero gamma and the largest nearby positive and negative concentrations, then compare those levels with VWAP, prior-day structure, breadth, and volatility. Agreement between independent inputs is more useful than a single impressive bar on a GEX chart.

Refresh after material spot movement or options-volume changes. Near expiration, gamma can change quickly, so a morning snapshot should not be treated as permanent for the entire session.
